In a letter sent to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, former Minister of Defense in Germany, and Joseph Borrell, the High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy in the European Union, the 17 signatories called for the protection of civil and parliamentary liberties in Israel, especially of those opposed to the war and the occupation, and to prevent the suppression of critical political voices . They also asked to invite the MK to visit the European Parliament.
Among the signatories are members of parliament from France, Greece and Spain, alongside the Italian politician Giuliano Pisapia from the Alliance of Socialists and Democrats – the mayor of Milan and a former member of the Italian parliament – and the Belgian politician Saskia Bricmont from the Free Alliance of the European Greens who was elected as a member of the European Parliament in 2019.
