The press release of the European Union of Journalists, whose short name is ATGB, is as follows:

Repressions cannot block free media!

While the wind of freedom and hope for the 14 May elections, which will change the fate of the country, is blowing increasingly, the pressure of the one-man regime on the media continues at full speed.

The 21-year AKP government continues to intimidate the social opposition by increasing pressure and censorship, shortly before the elections. Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) fined FOX TV, Flash Haber, Halk TV and TELE1 for allegedly “violating broadcasting principles”.

Among the reports given by all local and national serious journalism societies and agencies in Turkey, the sad facts for our colleagues are as follows: “In March 2023, 8 journalists were attacked, 16 detained and 1 arrested. The judicial grip on journalists continued in March. An investigation was opened against 4 journalists and a lawsuit was filed against 5 of them. Journalists were sentenced to 2 years in prison and a fine of 48,746 TL in the past month, when 41 separate trials continued. Two journalists were laid off. The oppressive attitude of the government and the judiciary towards internet publishing, which is one of the communication tools, has not changed. While 8 websites were shut down, access to 330 news stories and 1,84 social media content was blocked.“

As the European Turkish Journalists Association (ATGB), we convey our feelings of solidarity to our colleagues in Turkey and declare once again that we will continue our struggle for a secular, democratic and social state of law until the end! On April 6, the Day of Killed Journalists, we respectfully pay homage to our 67 journalist friends, including Uğur Mumcu, Abdi İpekçi, Çetin Emeç, Ahmet Taner Kışlalı, Hırant Dink and Metin Göktepe, who died in the person of the first press martyr, Hasan Fehmi Efendi, for the sake of enlightening the public. We commemorate and shout to the whole world that no oppression can intimidate us.

Journalism is not a crime. Our friends in Turkey are not alone.
