Leaders of European Union (EU) agreed to open negotiations with the Ukraine, for the country to join the group. The decision was announced this Thursday, 14.
In a surprise announcement, European Council President and EU summit chair Charles Michel said leaders had decided to open accession negotiations with two countries. In addition to Ukraine, Moldova was mentioned.
Furthermore, Michel mentioned two other nations as possible future members of the economic bloc. Through the social network Twitter/X, he stated that the EU granted the status candidate for Georgia, in the Caucasus. According to him, Bosnia and Herzegovina, on the Balkan Peninsula, will count on negotiations based on “compliance with the accession criteria”.

Ukraine, European Union and war against Russia
The heads of state of European countries prepared for a two-day meeting. Support for Ukraine is at the top of the bloc’s agenda.
The meeting comes at a crucial time for Ukraine, as President Volodymyr Zelensky travels the world looking for more help in the fight against Russia’s invasion.
The invasion of Ukrainian territory by Moscow troops has lasted almost two years. Russia’s first actions took place in February 2022.
