European Union Condemns Murder of Mexican Journalist
The European Union condemned the murder of journalist Alejandro Martinez Noguez, who was killed on Sunday, August 4th, following an armed attack on his vehicle. The attack was assigned by the municipality of Celaya for Martinez Noguez’s protection.
“The death of Mr. Martínez Noguez shows the degree of violence and intimidation that many journalists face in Mexico and that constitutes a threat against human rights,” the union said in a statement. “We urge all competent authorities to create a favorable environment and protection so that journalists in Mexico can carry out their beneficial activities freely.”
The EU also expressed its condolences to the family of the murdered journalist and wished a speedy recovery to the two bodyguards injured in the attack.
The statement noted that the armed attack and a previous attack in 2022 against Martinez Noguez suggest a direct link between his journalistic work and his murder.
The EU emphasized the need for authorities to create a safe and secure environment for journalists in Mexico, highlighting the threat posed by violence and intimidation.
