TAKASAKI, Japan (Reuters) – The European Union is likely to reach a deal this year that will pave the way for the world’s first major law dealing with artificial intelligence (AI), the bloc’s technology regulatory chief Margrethe Vestager said this week. Sunday.

This comes after a preliminary agreement last Thursday by members of the European Parliament to take the EU’s draft Artificial Intelligence Act to a vote by a committee of lawmakers on May 11.

Parliament will then discuss the final details of the bill with EU member states and the European Commission before it becomes law.

At a press conference following a Group of Seven (G7) ministerial meeting in Takasaki, Japan, Vestager said the EU’s AI law is “pro-innovation” as it seeks to mitigate the risks of social harm caused by emerging technologies. .

Regulators around the world have been trying to find a balance in which governments can build “safeguards” into emerging artificial intelligence technology without it stifling innovation.

“The reason we have these safeguards for high-risk use cases is that ‘cleaning up’ after AI misuse would be much more expensive and harmful than using AI per se,” Vestager said.
