The historian and member of Euskaltzaindia Joseba Intxausti Errekondo has died in San Sebastián at the age of 87, as reported by the Royal Academy of the Basque Language.

In a statement, the president of Euskaltzaindia, Andrés Urrutia, praised the figure of Intxausti, assuring that Basque culture “owes him a lot as a promoter of Euskara”, although “Euskaltzaindia owes him an even greater debt”.

He was born in the Gipuzkoan town of Segura on July 20, 1936. At the age of twelve he entered the Franciscan seminary in Arantzatzu and graduated in History at the University of Barcelona.

After being named a corresponding member of the Academy of the Basque Language in 1961, he worked for many years in Euskaltzaindia researching and disseminating the social history of the Basque language. He also contributed his knowledge to the literacy and grammar sections, and to the institution’s own magazine, ‘Euskera’. On November 26, 2004, he was named an honorary scholar.

He was the editor of ‘Jakin’ from 1962 to 1964, a task that he took up again from 1969 with a team made up of Joan Mari Torrealdai, Joxe Azurmendi, Paulo Agirrebaltzategi and Manolo Pagola, among others. Between 1973 and 1974 he was the director of the magazine ‘Anaitasuna’.

He also took over the management of UZEI (Basque Institute for University Services) in 1980, where he worked with Claudio Harluxet in the creation of the first computer dictionaries. Between 1984-1985 he coordinated the encyclopedic work ‘Euskal Herria’.
