Euskotren has awarded the company CAF the supply of five new multiple electrical units, for an amount of 53.6 million euros, to be delivered between the years 2026 and 2027. These units will integrate the new 980 Series and will provide service on metro line 5 in Bilbao, which will be managed by Euskotren.

The S-980 Series will initially consist of five multiple electric units of four cars, in a motor-motor-trailer-motor composition, with a nominal capacity to transport four hundred people. In addition, the units will include a bathroom adapted for people with reduced mobility.
These units will incorporate the most advanced innovations in the railway sector in terms of technology, reliability, sustainability, safety and ergonomics. They will also have ramps integrated into the access doors for people with reduced mobility, acoustic warnings for blind people and light signals for people with hearing difficulties. The new units will be sustainable and comply with all environmental regulations, as well as with the life cycles of each and every one of the materials.
ERTMS for Series 950
The process of modernization of the rolling stock of the Euskotren railway and metro services began in 2011, with the commissioning of the 900 Series multiple electrical units and has been completed in subsequent years with the incorporation of the Series 900 units. 950. In the current financial year 2023, another four trains (Series 940) have been received, with characteristics very similar to those of the S-950, which have introduced constant improvements in technological and safety features, while offering a sensation of homogeneity of the entire fleet in its interior and exterior design.
The new S-980 Series trains will provide Euskotren with greater capacity to meet the growing demand, both in special circulations for cultural, sporting or festive events as well as in the regular rail offer, whose needs will increase with the commissioning of the new layout of the metro line 5 in Bilbao.
On the other hand, CAF Signaling will be in charge of supplying the ERTMS level 1 equipment in the 28 units that make up the 950 Series, for an amount exceeding four million euros (4,006,208, without VAT).
In this way, Euskotren will provide these units with technological and safety improvements, already incorporated in the four most modern trains received by the operating company this year (Series 940), to adapt to the process of modernizing the infrastructures of the trains.
