Berlin Experts had suspected it for a long time, now it has been confirmed: The Sars-Cov-2 coronavirus belongs to the group of viruses that can cause the dreaded disease ME/CFS. The acronym stands for Myalgic Encephalitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. This is the result of a study conducted by researchers at the Charité and the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in Berlin.

In the study, the scientists compared people suffering from post-Covid with ME/CFS patients who had previously been infected with other viruses. It was previously known that Epstein-Barr, dengue and enteroviruses can trigger chronic fatigue. The work was published in the renowned journal “Nature Communications”.

ME/CFS is a severe multisystem disease in which the immune system, autonomic nervous system and energy metabolism in cells are dysregulated. Typical symptoms are persistent leaden tiredness, called fatigue, muscle pain, shortness of breath, noticeable problems concentrating and severe physical weakness. It’s like pulling the plug on those affected.
