Everton Beat Newcastle 3-1 to Reach Carabao Cup Quarter-Finals

“This is again a no-risk zone where we clear the ball and nothing happens, and a couple of seconds later you can see the goal out of nothing.” Everton advanced to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals by defeating Newcastle United 3-1 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on 29 October 2026, with goals from James Garner, Hayden Hackney, and Thierno Barry securing a match against Fleetwood Town.

Garner and Hackney Score to Build a Half-Time Lead

Everton seized control of the fourth-round tie after seeing off Newcastle 3-1 on Thursday night in front of around 8,000 traveling supporters in the away end. Despite early pressure from the visitors, David Moyes’ side broke the deadlock in the 34th minute when Amar Dedić lost possession near the corner flag under pressure from Tyrique George.

Newcastle had created several promising openings in the opening twenty minutes. Yet the visitors’ attacking wastefulness left them exposed just before the interval, as Matthias Jaissle’s side failed to make 56 percent possession and twenty-nine total shots count on the scoreboard.

Following a Newcastle attack where Barnes’ effort took a deflection and was gathered by Pickford, the Everton goalkeeper reacted sharply to launch a quick throw towards Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in the centre circle. Dewsbury-Hall spun away from Dan Burn before embarking on a determined run that was halted by a trip from behind by Ramsey. Farai Hallam played an excellent advantage as the ball broke to Barry.

Barry kept going and took the ball wide before digging out a cross for Hackney to guide home his first Everton goal right on the stroke of half-time.

Barry Secures Progress as a Late Scuffle Flares Up

As Newcastle committed numbers forward in search of a lifeline, Everton punished them again on the counter.

Garner initiated the move in the 69th minute, carrying the ball upfield and releasing Dewsbury-Hall down the left flank.

As Joelinton attempted to retrieve the ball from the net, he and James Tarkowski locked horns, igniting a mass melee involving Pickford and Burn.

Everton Face Fleetwood Town After Grealish Omission

The victory was achieved without Jack Grealish, who was omitted from the matchday squad after failing to show for a training session in the build-up.

The result sets up a quarter-final fixture for Everton away against League Two side Fleetwood Town during the week commencing 14 December, offering the Toffees a realistic path to their first cup semi-final since 2016.

The one thing about Everton and what they’ve got is they’ve got really good values behind it. All the players stand up to the values, accept the values Everton put out there, what we want from them on the pitch and off the pitch, and from that point of view, the players done a brilliant job tonight.
