Everton has completed its fourth summer signing by acquiring midfielder Christian Norgaard from Arsenal on a two-year contract for an undisclosed fee, with reported totals around £7 million. The 32-year-old Denmark international joins the Toffees following a single season at the Emirates Stadium, where playing time proved limited.
Everton manager David Moyes secured the experienced Danish midfielder as the club rebuilds its central options following recent departures and injuries reported across English football desks. Norgaard arrives at Hill Dickinson Stadium after making 20 appearances in all competitions for Mikel Arteta’s side last season, though only seven of those outings came in the Premier League as the north London club claimed their first title in 22 years.
The £7 Million Deal and the Road from Arsenal
While initial figures placed the agreement in principle at approximately £7 million, the transfer brings an end to a brief stint in north London for the former Brentford captain. Norgaard previously spent six years at Brentford and became a key player for the Bees, captaining the side and making 196 appearances. He joined Arsenal last summer from Brentford in a £15m deal, but found himself down the squad’s pecking order behind established midfielders including Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino, and Myles Lewis-Skelly, while Arsenal closed in on a move for Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.
Prior to his departure from the Emirates Stadium, Norgaard was left out of the Gunners squad for a friendly against Real Betis on Wednesday. His longest Premier League outing and solitary start last season occurred on the final day during a 2-1 victory at Crystal Palace as Arsenal lifted the trophy, a match where he was substituted at half-time for Kai Havertz. Having announced his retirement from international football with Denmark on May 12 after earning 41 caps and scoring twice, the 32-year-old sought a fresh start to secure regular minutes.

Filling the Void Left by Departing Midfielders
Norgaard has been identified as a natural replacement for Idrissa Gueye, whose departure from Merseyside was announced on July 24. Gueye concluded seven seasons of service across two spells, making 236 total appearances and scoring 10 goals. Because the 36-year-old Senegal international did not play enough matches last year to trigger a 12-month contract extension, and despite negotiations between both parties, his exit was finalized alongside the departures of Republic of Ireland defender Seamus Coleman, aged 37.
David Moyes has been looking for experienced players to add to his squad following these departures. The squad also faces an early-season absence from England international James Garner, 25, who underwent groin surgery last month and is set to miss the start of the campaign. The team begins its Premier League fixtures against Crystal Palace at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday, 22 August.

Norgaard’s arrival represents the club’s fourth addition of the current transfer window following a medical. The Merseyside outfit previously brought in central midfielder Hayden Hackney from Middlesbrough as the Championship Player of the Season for £16.5m, alongside 20-year-old winger Tyrique George, who was signed from Chelsea for £18m upfront after he spent the second half of last season on loan at the Toffees. The club also took up an obligation to turn Merlin Rohl’s loan from Freiburg into a permanent transfer after Everton avoided relegation, while the club was also eyeing a deal for Jack Grealish.
