Gianni Infantino arrived at the stadium in Santos today (Monday) to pay his last respects to the football legend Pele, who died last weekend after a battle with cancer at the age of 82. The FIFA president announced that he intends to ask all countries to name the stadium after Pele, with the goal being to commemorate His name forever in places that convey the emotion of football.
“Fela has a unique legacy,” said the president of the World Football Association and continued: “Fela received a gift from God, a gift that few people on earth have and that is to touch people’s hearts. The fact is that there are a lot of people around the world, probably billions, who like me have never seen him play but think about him and his family and respect him.”
The FIFA president continued: “For these reasons, we are here to pay our respects to him and talk to all countries to honor Pele’s memory. We want every country in the world to have a football stadium named after Pele. In 50 or 100 years, when a child asks ‘who was Pele’, then we will be able to remember him. And in the place where he used to score the goals, that’s where we need to make sure it happens.”
