Electric cars could reach a market share of as much as 24 percent in Europe next year as many manufacturers launch a campaign for cheaper models to reverse the trend of falling demand for electric cars, European lobby group Transport&Environment believes.

“Next year will be a great one for Europeans in the electric car market. Electric cars are expected to make up almost a quarter of new car sales thanks to a host of new, more affordable models. Reliance on hybrid manufacturers that are reaching the limits of their potential for CO2 savings, is a short-sighted strategy to compete with Chinese electric cars,” said Lucien Mathieu, director of automotive at T&E.

From January to July, electric cars accounted for 12.5 percent of all new car registrations in the EU. Next year, more affordable electric cars, such as the Renault 5 or the Citroen e-C3, are expected to appear on the market.
