Tips for lighting living rooms

For most homes, the living room is the most important room. As the linchpin of apartments and houses, the living room is the place where we read, write, rest or receive guests. In order to meet the different requirements, one light is usually not enough.
The living room requires at least three lights that are suitable for general lighting and special area lighting.

Different types of lighting

Ceiling lights are the best choice for general lighting in the living room. Floor lamps can be used for area lighting. The decision often falls on floor lamps with an integrated reading lamp. Pendant lights above the dining table are also particularly suitable.

Another interesting option are small wall lights or spots that effectively highlight small areas such as sideboards, wall pictures or other decorative elements.

Lamps that hang at eye level are particularly eye-catching. (More on the topic: Lighting in the living room – How to make it practical and cozy)

Things worth knowing about lighting for the kitchen

Kitchens are usually used to prepare food and eat together. That’s why a kitchen has to be functional and cozy at the same time. A good decision is to divide it into basic, task and accent lighting.
In general, it is important for kitchen lighting that the light does not glare. Otherwise the risk of accidents is too high. Ideally, the lamp surface allows for quick cleaning of dust and other dirt. Lamps placed near the stove or microwave should be able to withstand heat and humidity.

Functional lights

The task of basic lighting for the kitchen is that the kitchen must be completely illuminated if necessary. Ceiling lights primarily serve this purpose. Models made of steel, glass, metal or plastic are particularly suitable because they can be cleaned quickly and easily. Ideally, the basic lighting is enhanced with a dimming function.

Separate work lighting is recommended in the kitchen for the cooking and baking area.

It is important that the work areas are sufficiently lit, especially when cutting individual ingredients. A good choice are lamps mounted under the wall cabinets. Special accent lighting creates a feel-good atmosphere in the kitchen. This effect is achieved, for example, by LED strips that can be attached to shelves or the lower edges of work areas. Pendant lights can also add visual accents.
So-called plant lights are a good choice for all hobby chefs who want to grow herbs in their kitchen.

The right lighting in the bathroom

For the right lighting in the bathroom, good mirror lighting is a must. The lighting should be bright enough to provide enough light for make-up or shaving. Ideally, there are two lights in a bathroom, mounted to the left and right of the mirror. These lamps illuminate the body and face evenly without creating shadows. Accented light sources bring additional atmosphere to a bathroom.
In addition, isolated points of light further loosen up the bathroom ambience. Recessed lamps in the floor, ceiling and wall niches are particularly suitable for this purpose.

Requirements for lights for bathrooms

However, because bathrooms are wet rooms, lamps located near bathtubs, showers and washbasins should meet special protection class requirements. This protection type indicates the environment for which the electrical devices are suitable.

The protection class is specified with “IP” and supplemented by two numbers.

The general rule: The higher the numbers, the more effective their resistance to water. Lights suitable for the bathroom area are those with the designation “IP44”.

Demands on lighting for the bedroom

To create a cozy atmosphere in the bedroom, a simple ceiling light and two bedside lamps are not enough. Instead, it is important to have basic lighting that is suitable for dressing and cleaning. Ceiling lamps serve this purpose particularly well.
Bedside lamps are very suitable for illuminating individual areas, for example, making it easy to read in bed. LED strips or fairy lights provide optimal accent lighting.

Subtle and not too bright

The right lighting for the bed is important, for example, to illuminate short routes to the toilet at night.

Lighting attached to the bed that reacts to movements via a sensor is particularly convenient.

Stripes or small night lights are suitable for this form of lighting.

Closet lighting is also useful so that you don’t have to search unnecessarily in the closet. Recessed lights, stripes, spots or spotlights can be considered for this effect. Extravagant special effects create light sources such as fairy lights, a starry sky or small light elements above the make-up mirror.

The right lighting for the workplace in the home office

LED lights are also particularly suitable for work areas in the office or home office, as the light sources are cost-efficient, long-lasting and energy-saving at the same time. There should not be too much light contrast between the rest of the room and the work area so as not to strain the eyes unnecessarily. LED panels for the office, for example, fulfill this purpose. The appropriate basic lighting should consist of direct and indirect lighting as well as daylight. A mobile device is particularly suitable for choosing a desk lamp.

Ideally, the devices have a swiveling arm, thanks to which the lamp can be repositioned again and again. A clamp lamp is a very good choice for small desks because these devices can easily be clipped to a shelf. Right-handed people should place the desk lamp on the left side, left-handed people on the right side. (More on the topic: The right lighting at the desk – what to pay attention to?)
