These days, when technology is developing so quickly that people can hardly keep up, even low-quality cameras and broken televisions exude an analogue sensibility. Kim Deok-hee’s new work, which expresses everyday emotions using dismantled light-emitting diode (LED) displays or low-quality electronic billboards, was unveiled at Gallery Baton in Yongsan-gu, Seoul on the 14th.

This solo exhibition, ‘Apple and Moon’, presents the installation work Umbra (2024), the series ‘Partial Eclipse’ (2024) using an electric sign, and the installation work ‘Night to Night’ (2024) using paraffin. The main work of the exhibition, ‘Umbra’, is the light bulbs of the LED display screen separated one by one. The wires connecting the light bulbs hang down like hair, and the light bulbs at the end of them twinkle like stars. The four screens, which contain the artist’s daily life or edited videos that touched her heart, mix together to create a hazy atmosphere.

‘Partial Eclipse’ was inspired by the low resolution and the feeling that the light from the large-grained electronic signboard was beautiful. The black and white screen depicts an image of the night sky like the universe, and between them, images of everyday life move faintly. The gallery staff explained, “Just like Newton thought of the moon from an apple, we wanted to show the message in the work that goes back and forth between the micro and macro worlds.” Until September 14th.
