The use of antidepressants is complex. You have different types of antidepressants, people and types of depression. This means that not everyone reacts the same to a type of medicine. All the different types of antidepressant medication are aimed at raising your serotonin level in your brain. Serotin is also called the happiness hormone and affects your mood, self-confidence and sleep, among other things.
However, depression is so complex that the addition of serotonin alone is not sufficient. “When people in the Netherlands start a treatment plan, it is led in phases. If the first phase does not work, you move on to phase two,” says Ramakers. This may mean that a patient is given stronger medicines or a mix of different medicines.
