Actor Lee Yi-kyung recalled the verbal abuse he received from several directors when he was a rookie.
Lee Yi-kyung appeared as a guest on the web entertainment show ‘Young K’s K Survival EP.5’ recently released on YouTube’s ‘Daily Seven – 117’.
When Young K asked, “Have you ever felt sad when you were a rookie?” Lee Yi-kyung answered, “I can’t stop talking. We feel close because we have similar impressions,” and talked about the sadness he felt because of his appearance.
Lee Yi-kyung said, “When I was a rookie, I heard things like, ‘Your eyes are slanted,’ and ‘You have no manners.’ I would just sit still, and they’d say, ‘What’s with your expression?’ and ‘You look so shameless.’ Now that things are going well, people call me a desert fox, but in the past, people didn’t say things like that.”
Young K, who has double eyelids, also agreed, saying, “When I was young, I also heard (that kind of thing) a lot. (So) I laughed a lot and walked around.”
Lee Yi-kyung then recalled the comments she received about her appearance in front of other people, saying, “One director would make groups of five for auditions and tell me, ‘Look at me from side to side. What do you think? You’re handsome, right? You can’t do it. ‘”
Lee Yi-kyung also revealed another rumor he heard at an audition. He said, “A director once said, ‘If I cast you, the drama will do well, right?’ It was a small role at the time, but I had appeared in dramas like ‘Descendants of the Sun’ and ‘My Love from the Star.’ So when I said, ‘I think the drama did well because I was lucky,’ he said, ‘Does it work if I cast you? Can’t you pray for our drama? Do we really have to cast you? Even if we don’t cast you, just pray for us.’ At that time, I couldn’t recite a single line, but he just said that and sent me away.”
Finally, when Lee Kyung-eun said, “There was a director who said he would support you if you did well,” Young-kei was delighted and said, “Many people must have supported you.”
