‘Everyone should come forward to take multifaceted initiatives for the development of education’

In a message given on the occasion of ‘International Literacy Day’ on September 8, the President said, ‘I welcome the initiative of celebrating International Literacy Day-2024 in Bangladesh as in other countries of the world.’

The President said that education is one of the fundamental rights of people. The constitution of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh has included free and compulsory primary education as well as eradication of illiteracy in order to promote universal education with the aim of building a knowledge-based developed nation. Considering the importance of education in nation building, everyone should come forward to ensure the adoption and implementation of multifaceted initiatives for the development of the education sector. Ensuring quality and inclusive education, ensuring access to schools for all children, providing free tuition and textbooks, providing stipends to students, launching school feeding programs in poverty-stricken areas and making education enjoyable for students by conducting teaching as well as co-educational programs.

Md. Sahabuddin said, currently the literacy rate has increased to 77.9 percent. The number of primary schools has increased. School enrollment and primary completion rates have increased, dropout rates have decreased. Apart from imparting appropriate education and training in classrooms, skill based literacy programs for out-of-school children and adolescents are contributing to human resource development of the country.

He also said that educational programs should be conducted in different languages to make education universal. I think the theme of this year’s International Literacy Day – ‘Promoting Multilingual Education: Literacy for Reconciliation and Peace’ – is very timely in the current context. With the change of era, there has been a variation in the demand for education and in the way educational programs are conducted. In order to establish a modern Bangladesh without discrimination, it is necessary to formulate mass-oriented education for all, create opportunities for vocational education, develop entrepreneurship and employability training and provide literacy with information technology. In addition to providing appropriate education and training in the classroom, increasing opportunities for information technology-based education can play a role in human resource development. To ensure quality education for all, I call upon the government as well as local public representatives, non-governmental organizations, civil society and all concerned to work together.
