“Everything Gets Dark Suddenly”: 14 killed in volcanic eruption in Indonesia

by time news

Large rescue forces continue to search for survivors in villages affected by the Samaru volcano eruption over the weekend, when the death toll reached 14 and nearly 100 were injured.

The highest volcano on the island of Java, which rises to 3,676 meters, began to emit ash clouds on Saturday that reached a height of more than 12,000 meters, and lava rivers flowed on the mountain slopes. At least 11 villages near the mountain were covered with ash, which in some areas reached a height of about four meters, and it was reported that close to 30 buildings and a bridge were destroyed.

The fierce eruption, a year after the previous eruption of the mountain, caused a mass panic and residents began to seek refuge. “Suddenly everything became dark, the bright afternoon turned to night. The sound of thunder and heat forced us to flee to the mosque,” said a local resident named Patma. “It was much stronger than the January eruption.”

Rescuers were rushed to the area to help those trapped in uneasy conditions, caused by the heat clouds from the mountain and the heavy rocks that blocked roads.
By yesterday, it was reported that at least 14 people had been killed and close to 100 injured, with many of the injured suffering from burns. At least ten people trapped inside the mines were rescued safely and more than 1,300 residents were evacuated from the area.
