The Sims 4 officially goes free-to-play today, making one of the monuments of video gaming a completely free experience. We take stock.
[Mis à jour le 18 octobre 2022 à 11h22] With its good billion in profits generated, and its 36 million active players in the world, The Sims 4 does not make anyone doubt its status as a pillar of the video game world. Our talkative avatars seduce thanks to the undeniable charm offered by a second life, and this since the release of the game in September 2014. Eight years later, Electronic Arts took a completely different direction for its game, choosing to offer it this Tuesday, October 18 free-to-play status. Yes, you heard it right, The Sims 4 has become totally free, available for free download on the platforms of the American publisher. But beware, some small details interfere in this important event, especially for players who have already purchased the game. We take stock just below.
It’s a little bombshell that EA Games dropped in mid-September by telling us that The Sims 4 would become totally free October 18. An announcement ahead of Behind the Sims Summit, the conference entirely dedicated to games and extensions of our gibberish avatars which took place recently. Concretely, the basic game, The Sims 4, is available for free download on PC et Mac via Origin ou EA App, et sur Playstation 5, Playstation 4, Xbox Series X|S et Xbox One. This transition to free-to-play obviously does not concern the game’s dozen expansion packs, which of course remain optional and paid for.
For subscribers to EA Play and EA Play Pro, Electronic Arts’ two video game subscription services, the experience won’t be quite the same. Various Sims 4 expansion packs have been available in a Play List since October 18. For EA Play players, this means access to The Sims 4 Get to Work Expansion Pack, and for EA Play Pro subscribers access to the same expansion pack plus a Toddler Stuff Pack.
If you want to join the free adventure of The Sims 4, know that you can find the game on the EA platforms, namely Origin and the EA App. You can download both clients from EA’s official website, and we recommend that you opt for the EA App instead, which is destined to become the main application for Electronic Arts.

The transition to free-to-play of The Sims 4 took place on last october 18. The game is therefore available for free download on PC and Mac via the Origin and EA App applications, and on the official Playstation and Xbox stores. For all players who already own The Sims 4, EA has provided a small gift during this transition to free-to-play, namely a “Desert Luxe” or Desert Luxe expansion kit. This kit is available for download, and was free until October 17th.
