With the ninth generation of ROG Phone, Asus has decided to rework the design of its devices. Considered too modern and futuristic, the old models no longer convince. has focused on a feature already present on the ROG Phone 8, significantly improved for its latest models: the rear screen. Now featuring 648 mini-LEDs on the Pro (up from 340 on the previous generation), it can run animations pre-designed by Asus, but also drawn by the user themselves. Please note that the rear screen can support some retro games, for example Space invader, Snake, I pose…
Titled “Anime Play”, this feature is however not available on the base Rog Phone 9, which only has 85 mini-LEDs. No games or animations will be offered on this model.
Increased performance
Designed to support larger gaming sessions, the ROG Phone 9 sees its performance significantly improved compared to the previous generation. Equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor and an advanced ROG GameCool 9 cooling system, the latest gadget from Asus intends to run the biggest mobile games, such as Genshin Impact or even Honkai Star Rail.
Also note that artificial intelligence plays an important role in the performance of the ROG Phone 9. The model has many features enhanced by artificial intelligence, such as AI noise cancellation, which eliminates unwanted sounds during gaming, or AI Grabber 2.0 , which uses text recognition and makes it easier to find suggestions about a game.
The ROG Phone 9 finally offers a revolutionary refresh rate, which goes up to 185 Hz (compared to 165 Hz on the ROG Phone 8 Pro). An admirable but somewhat unnecessary improvement, given that the human eye isn’t necessarily able to differentiate the two performances.
New AI features
As with all latest generation phones, Asus Republic of Gamers has given greater importance to artificial intelligence, adding many features not only oriented towards gaming. Very useful new features that cover all areas and make using the ROG Phone 9 easier.
With the addition of AI Call Translator, ROG Phone can instantly translate any foreign language conversation. For the moment, only some languages are managed by this service (French, English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Chinese), but others may be added to the catalog in the future.
Artificial intelligence also makes it possible to design backgrounds according to different themes, to generate structured texts or to create summaries of texts and Internet pages.
A phone that turns into a controller
Equipped with the famous AirTrigger controls, the ROG Phone 9 is capable of transforming into a real gaming controller. With these tactile keys positioned discreetly across the entire width of the phone, gamers will find their gaming capabilities greatly facilitated and optimized.
Furthermore, you can combine the ROG Phone 9 with a ROG Tessen mobile controller, which makes the phone an original and unique portable console. Please note that this is offered at a price of €119.99.

Interview between Time.news Editor and Mobile Gaming Expert
Editor: Welcome to Time.news! Today we’re thrilled to have with us John Miller, a mobile gaming expert and technology analyst. John, thanks for joining us!
John Miller: Thank you for having me! I’m excited to discuss the latest innovations in mobile gaming, especially with the new ROG Phone 9 series.
Editor: Absolutely! The ROG Phone 9 just launched, and there’s a lot of buzz. What do you think sets it apart from its predecessors?
John Miller: The ROG Phone 9 really enhances the gamer’s experience by incorporating significant technological advancements. First and foremost, the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor paired with the revamped GameCool 9 cooling system means it can handle the most demanding mobile games like Genshin Impact and Honkai Star Rail without overheating. That’s a game-changer!
Editor: Speaking of changes, I noticed Asus reworked the design of the phone. How do you think that will impact its audience?
John Miller: Indeed, they’ve ditched the overly flashy aesthetics of previous models in favor of a more simplistic and versatile look. This redesign is a strategic move to appeal not just to hardcore gamers but also to a broader consumer base. It can now sit comfortably next to more conventional smartphones while still delivering top-tier performance.
Editor: The ROG Phone 9 features an improved rear screen with 648 mini-LEDs on the Pro model. Can you tell us how this enhancement benefits users?
John Miller: Sure! This feature, especially with the “Anime Play,” allows users to express their creativity by designing animations or playing classic retro games like Space Invaders and Snake. This sort of personalization elevates the user experience, making it not only functional but also fun. It’s great for those who enjoy showcasing their device in a unique way.
Editor: What about performance enhancements? It looks like they’ve raised the refresh rate to 185 Hz. Is this necessary for most users?
John Miller: That’s a fascinating topic! While higher refresh rates can make for smoother graphics, the truth is that the difference between 165 Hz and 185 Hz may not be perceptible to the average user. However, for competitive gamers, every millisecond counts, and this can provide a competitive edge. Plus, the integration of AI features adds another layer to performance by optimizing gameplay and minimizing distractions with features like AI noise cancellation.
Editor: AI seems to play a significant role in this new model. What AI features do you think will resonate most with users?
John Miller: One standout feature is the AI Call Translator, which provides instant translation of conversations in several languages. It not only aids gamers in global multiplayer settings but also enhances overall communication. The ability to create themed backgrounds and summarize content can streamline the user experience, making it much more intuitive.
Editor: Given its gaming orientation, do you think there’s potential for the ROG Phone 9 to gain traction with non-gaming customers?
John Miller: Definitely! While it’s tailored for gamers, many features—like the AI functionalities, high performance, and sleek design—appeal to a wider audience. Tech enthusiasts and casual users alike will appreciate the advanced specifications and versatility, so it could very well win over ordinary customers interested in a powerful smartphone.
Editor: Great insights, John! what do you foresee as the future of mobile gaming and smartphones like the ROG Phone?
John Miller: The future is indeed exciting! We’ll likely see more integration of AI to enhance user interactions and possibly more cross-platform functionalities that blur the lines between consoles and mobile devices. As technology advances, we can expect smartphones to evolve into powerful gaming hubs, offering experiences that rival traditional gaming systems.
Editor: Thank you so much, John! This has been an enlightening conversation, and I’m sure our readers appreciate your perspective on the ROG Phone 9 and the future of mobile gaming!
John Miller: Thank you for having me! I look forward to seeing how the landscape evolves.
