Bahn travelers must be prepared for further strikes. “The option for strikes is of course on the table,” said EVG negotiator Kristian Loroch on Wednesday in Berlin after the rejection of Deutsche Bahn’s latest tariff offer. This had rejected further negotiations because the union did not back away from its original demands.

Loroch said the negotiation commission would discuss on Wednesday and submit a recommendation to the collective bargaining commission. “Then a decision will be made in the course of the next few days.” One thinks first of further warning strikes, but a vote on an indefinite strike is also an option.

Bahn Human Resources Director against further negotiations

The state-owned company had previously rejected further negotiations with the union: “It’s pointless at the moment because the ECG isn’t moving a millimeter,” said DB HR Director Martin Seiler. The flat-rate rejection of the third, again greatly improved offer from the railways by the EVG is “incomprehensible”. The union shows no concessions and makes no proposals for solutions. “She simply stubbornly insists on her initial demands.” Constant refilling by the railways ultimately leads to a wage agreement on credit and to a burden on the taxpayer.

Current offer: 12 percent more wages for 24 months

Deutsche Bahn improved its offer again last week and is now offering up to twelve percent more wages for a period of 24 months. For middle incomes it means ten percent more, for higher incomes eight percent more. In addition, there would be 2,850 euros to compensate for inflation later this year. Overall, this costs the group 1.4 billion euros a year.

The union had described the offer on Tuesday evening as insufficient, especially for lower wage groups, but was willing to negotiate. The EVG demands twelve percent more wages, but at least 650 euros more per month. The union had emphasized its demands with two industrial disputes in March and April, paralyzing rail traffic nationwide. She negotiates for around 230,000 employees at around 50 rail and bus companies, including around 180,000 at Deutsche Bahn.
