The former Les Bleues basketball player was a member of the athletes’ commission of the French Olympic committee. At the beginning of October, she published a controversial message on Instagram.

Ambassador for the 2024 Olympic Games, Emilie Gomis will lose her position this week, according to information published Tuesday January 2 by Le Parisien. The fate of the 2012 Olympic basketball vice-champion was in suspense since she published a controversial message on social networks after the attacks of October 7. There we saw maps of France dated 1947, 1967 and 2023 on which the tricolor flag covering French territory was gradually replaced by the Israeli flag, with this question: “What would you do in this situation?”

In its Tuesday edition, le Parisien writes that “the ethics committee of the CNOSF, which had been contacted by the president of the French Olympic movement David Lappartient, […] decided, at the end of December, to propose the removal of Gomis for proven violation of ethical principles. A proposal which will be followed up on Thursday, during a meeting of this athletes’ commission.

The former Les Bleues basketball player was a member of the athletes’ commission of the French Olympic committee. She apologized on her Instagram account and in the columns of L’Equipe.

In mid-December, the Cojo ethics committee, contacted by the organizers of the Paris Games, judged that Emilie Gomis’ post “clearly referred to events concerning the State of Israel and Palestine, in particular the Gaza Strip, notably the United Nations partition plan for Palestine in 1947, the Six-Day War and the vote on United Nations Security Council Resolution 242 in 1967. Message which could “furthermore be legitimately interpreted as suggesting that the France of 2023, whose map is dominated by the Star of David, is also “invaded by the Jews””.

The lawyers of the player, who is also a member of the board of directors of Paris 2024, immediately recalled that she had “immediately” deleted her post once “alerted about its inadequate nature”. Emilie Gomis “esteems herself […] dishonored and defamed by the accusations of anti-Semitism of which she is a victim,” they added, specifying that she did not intend to resign from her functions.
