Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu flew to Minsk and signed documents on nuclear weapons in Belarus with his Belarusian counterpart Viktor Khrenin. The documents were signed while Lukashenka is in Moscow.

Is this a coincidence or is the Kremlin demonstratively showing that it can deal with such issues even without the Belarusian ruler? The Charter97.org website talked about this with a political scientist Anatoly Kotov.

– Firstly, Khrenin would not have signed anything without permission from above. Therefore, there is no need to look for some kind of superconspiracy, in what circumstances, geographical or temporal, this signature appeared under the document. We need to look at what follows from this, and at least a few things follow from this. It has now been officially confirmed that there are legal possibilities for deploying tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus. Lukashenka’s fairy tales that he will control something have been officially refuted.

The weapon is Russian, the button will be in the Kremlin. This is a clear confirmation that Lukashenka is not an independent figure in military matters, it has now become public, Shoigu repeated this several times with gusto. Now this is more important than the fact that we missed the main interest in all this schematosis. It also follows from this that a very large, fat target was painted in Belarus, which, in which case, becomes a priority target for a preventive strike. If these people say that they are defending the country, then the question is what. This is clearly not Belarus.

– You said that Shoigu refuted Lukashenka’s fairy tales about nuclear weapons control. Does the Kremlin specifically focus on this?

– I think yes. Firstly, it was necessary to disavow the statements of the Belarusian “ally”, who, perhaps, very much wants to gain control over the “spear of death”, but no one will give it into his hands. Secondly, it is a bit oriented towards the West, it also needs to be reassured somehow. If we consider the situation that the weapons will be moved, and also assess some risks, it is still clearer and safer for the West if they are in the hands of the Russians than a strange character who seized power in the center of Europe.

– Lukashenka does not comment on this document in any way, and it appeared after the dictator flew to Moscow. Could he have had some unpleasant conversation about nuclear weapons with Putin?

“Behind closed doors, there may be some such conversation, although there is no surprise for Lukashenka that no one will entrust him with control over the button. Another thing is that there is the concept of physical control over what, as it were, cannot be used, but can be considered as nuclear material.

The question here is who has more rights to be considered the controller of ammunition, which, although they cannot be blown up without a command from the Kremlin, is of some value. Looking now at the ratio of Russian troops and Belarusian troops, probably, physically, this is still a toy in Lukashenka’s hands, namely material, not weapons. Also a value, although not as dangerous.
