Blockmarket – Gene Borrello, former mobster and federal informant, gave an interview, where he commented on his stay in prison alongside Sam Beckman Fried (SBF), founder and former CEO of the failed cryptocurrency brokerage FTX.
To avoid further problems for the former CEO of FTX, SBF was placed in a special section of the prison. Still, there was at least one extortion attempt on Sam by an inmate due to his reputation as a former billionaire.
Borrello said he stopped the intimidation, which earned him a few days in solitary confinement. As reported, Sam was almost sent to solitary confinement at the request of his parents, who feared for his safety.
The former mobster described Sam as shy and weak, which is getting him into trouble in prison:
“He has the body of an 80-year-old man. He doesn’t have, like, any form, you know what I mean? […] When he talks to you, he lowers his head, he is very shy, he speaks very nervously.”
Additionally, Borrello detailed that Sam spent a few days teaching inmates finance and business, as well as ways to achieve financial success. When asked about his fortune, Sam stated that he didn’t have many luxuries:
“I said, what are you doing with the money? What kind of watch did you have? He said, ‘I had an Apple (NASDAQ:) Watch,’ I said, ‘What kind of car did you drive?’ He said, ‘a 2020 Toyota Camry.’ My friends and I thought, ‘So why the hell did you steal the money?’
Borrello also said that Sam claimed he would spend 20 years in prison, and could even be declared innocent. However, the former billionaire may potentially never leave federal prison again:
“We looked at him like he was crazy. I kept trying to explain to him that you would never see the outside again.”
Sam’s sentencing is scheduled for March 28. The founder of FTX faces up to 115 years in prison for his financial crimes.
