ex-number 1 Pliskova rehires his coach who was fired in July

Former world number one Karolina Pliskova announced on her website on Tuesday that she had rehired Sascha Bajin, the German coach from whom she left in July. The 30-year-old Czech had since been trained by her compatriot Leos Friedl, and had tumbled to 31st in the WTA rankings, without winning a single tournament.

Before working with the Czech, Bajin (38) helped Naomi Osaka to back-to-back Grand Slam victories at the US Open in 2018 and Australian Open in 2019. Named 2018 Coach of the Year the WTA, the German coach has also worked with Serena Williams and Kristina Mladenovic.

Pliskova, 16 singles titles, had hired Bajin in November 2020. Under his leadership she had reached the Wimbledon final in 2021. They separated this year, after Pliskova was eliminated in the second round on English turf. Pliskova has never won a Grand Slam title and her last WTA title dates back to Brisbane in January 2020.
