Ex-NYPD Officer Charged With Murder of Brooklyn Jogger Katie Suarez

An ex-New York City police officer was arrested on November 7, 2026, and charged with second-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of 28-year-old Brooklyn jogger Katie Suarez, according to Newsweek.

Attack on Shore Parkway Greenway

Katie Suarez was attacked on October 30 while running along the Shore Parkway Greenway in Bath Beach, Brooklyn, as reported by CBS News. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny stated that Suarez left her job at a TD Bank in Caesar’s Bay around 6:30 p.m. that evening.

Based on her LinkedIn profile, she received her associate’s degree from Kingsborough Community College in 2018 before completing her bachelor’s in television and radio at Brooklyn College in 2020.

When she failed to return after an hour, her father went searching along the path and discovered her under a tree with a stab wound to her neck. She fought for her life at NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn before dying from her injuries days later.

That day we had gone out … she told me, ‘Mom stay here and wait for me,’ Yasira Suarez said. I would always join her on her runs but that evening I stayed behind waiting for her.

Facing reporters after her daughter’s death, Yasira Suarez issued an emotional public plea for information. If you are watching, turn yourself in … please, turn yourself in, she said. You took an angel.

Investigators examined the surrounding area and reviewed available surveillance footage, while a license plate reader on the Belt Parkway recorded roughly 1,700 cars passing between 7:56 p.m. and 8:12 p.m. as authorities worked to track down drivers with dashcams, according to police.

The case drew comparisons from NBC New York to the 2016 killing of Karina Vetrano, who was found dead in Spring Creek Park hours after going for a run in Howard Beach.

Following the attack, local officials including Councilmember Susan Zhuang wrote to Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch requesting mobile light towers along the path, increased patrols, and more cameras.

Suspect Background and Arrest

Fox News reported that 27-year-old Sayed Mohassib was taken into custody on November 7, facing accusations of second-degree murder, weapon possession, and physical evidence tampering. Court filings cited by the New York Daily News indicate that Mohassib gave a statement to investigators claiming he went to the bike path because people were going to harm his family.

New York Police Department investigators searched a garbage dump in New Jersey, hoping to recover the murder weapon that police sources believe he threw into the trash.

Official city employment records cited by Newsweek show Mohassib earned an annual salary of $42,500 and briefly served as an NYPD officer after graduating from the police academy in October 2022.

He was assigned to military and extended leave on November 28 after serving as an active officer for just over a month, his firearm was removed and never returned, and NBC News reported he officially resigned on December 16, 2022, while still on military assignment.

After leaving the NYPD, Mohassib served in the United States Marine Corps before being discharged on psychiatric grounds, according to law enforcement sources. In January 2023, the NYPD denied his request for reinstatement after he exhibited strange behavior when he tried to get his job back in person, according to NBC News.

Employment at P.S. 200

Following his separation from law enforcement, Mohassib worked as a paraprofessional for the New York City Department of Education at P.S. 200 in Bensonhurst, located blocks from where Suarez was attacked, as reported by The Independent. School officials confirmed he continued reporting to work among students in the days following the October 30 killing.

The safety of our students is our very top priority. We have suspended this individual and will move to terminate employment pending the outcome of the conviction, a DOE spokesperson said in a statement, adding that Department of Education officials would be supporting the NYPD in their investigation.
