Gerhard Schröder turned 80 on Sunday. On this special occasion, it was not only his current wife, Soyeon Schröder-Kim, who addressed the former Chancellor personally.
In 2015, Gerhard Schröder and Soyeon Kim met at a business conference, and three years later the politician and the interpreter said yes. The two are still married to this day, and the 56-year-old repeatedly shares insights into her everyday married life on Instagram – and so she also uses her social media channel to wish her partner a happy birthday.
Soyeon Schröder-Kim publishes a couple photo. The two stand side by side, holding their hands and looking into the camera, smiling. “My husband turned 80. We are happy,” the South Korean native writes in the caption.
But Soyeon Schröder Kim is not the only one celebrating Gerhard Schröder’s anniversary. His ex-wife Doris Schröder-Köpf also dedicated personal lines to him. As “Bild” reports, the 60-year-old sent her ex-husband a congratulations card – via the official post. She began the letter with the words “dear Gerd” and also wished him “all the best, especially health.”
“I am, so to speak, his deputy and as this I hope that his life and his political achievements will one day be viewed more fully again,” says Doris Schröder-Köpf. Gerhard Schröder and his ex-wife are still politically connected because the journalist is a member of the SPD state parliament.
In Hanover, Doris Schröder-Köpf looks after the Oststadt Zoo constituency, also known as the Zooviertel. She owns a house in this area with her ex-husband. Gerhard Schröder lives in one of the apartments with his current wife Soyeon Schröder-Kim. Schröder-Köpf also lives in the Zooviertel, in the Schröders’ former family home.
Gerhard Schröder was married five times
In 1997 Gerhard Schröder married the journalist Doris Schröder-Köpf. The two met when the former chancellor was Prime Minister of Lower Saxony and Schröder-Köpf worked as an editor at the Munich news magazine “Focus”. The first meeting took place after an evening event in a hotel in Frankfurt am Main. There were first rumors of separation in 2015, and the couple was officially divorced in April 2018. Two and a half weeks later, Gerhard Schröder went to the altar with Soyeon Schröder-Kim.
Gerhard Schröder not only looks back on an eventful career in politics, but also on a turbulent love life: the former Chancellor married five times. In addition to Doris Schröder-Köpf and Soyeon Schröder-Kim, he married his childhood friend Eva Schubach, the teacher Anne Taschenmacher and the animal rights activist Hiltrud Hensen.
