Sergio Miter will likely spend the rest of his life locked up after being found guilty of murdering his ex-wife’s daughter.

Mitre, a pitcher, played eight seasons in Major League Baseball, even winning a world championship with the Yankees in 2009.

He was sentenced to 50 years in prison in Mexico for events that occurred in July 2020, according to local media. He was charged with sexual assault and murder.

The 22-month-old victim’s autopsy showed signs of sexual assault. His death was the result of hypovolemic shock, described as a sudden decrease in the volume of blood in the bloodstream, preventing the heart from pumping enough blood around the body.

Prosecutors in the case say Miter punched the child in the lower back after an argument between him and the toddler’s mother.

Although the mother was soon taken to hospital with the child who had passed out and was vomiting, he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.

Miter’s last game with the Yankees was in 2011. He played in Mexican leagues before being convicted of his crimes.
