Last May, resistance fighter Edmond Réveil broke the silence. According to his revelations, 46 German soldiers and a French woman accused of collaboration were shot there in Meymac (Corrèze) by guerrillas in June 1944. The excavations began on Wednesday August 16.

In an undergrowth of Corrèze, a large rectangular surface has been turned over since the afternoon of Wednesday August 16, dug to see a dark page of history reappear: the bodies of 46 German soldiers and a Frenchwoman, executed during WWII. This is to give them an identity and a dignified burial. “Anthropology will not be able to say exactly what happened. We will be able to give the bone traumas, say where on the body the bullets were found”says Marine Meucci, archaeo-anthropologist. “If it turns out that we can’t find them, further research will be needed. Based on the elements we have, we are doing testimonials and a ground penetrating radar campaign”specifies Étienne Desplanques, prefect of Corrèze.

The precious testimony of the last resistant

The radar survey of the land was launched a month ago, after testimony from the last living resistance fighter, Edmond Réveil. He was in Tulle on June 18, 1944. His group took 46 prisoners, German soldiers and a French woman suspected of working with the Gestapo. The convoy is taken into the woods but the German army is still around. The order falls: execute all the prisoners. Almost a century old, Edmond Réveil is the last to be able to reveal this secret.
