by time news
“It was an extraordinary Paralympics, because the result was extraordinary in terms of the number of medals, and it was not at all simple to surpass Tokyo, also for the positioning of the medal table, which evidently confirms a positive, enterprising, and determined path of the Paralympic world together with the federations, athletes, their technical staff, civilian grassroots sports groups, but also with state bodies and the Paralympic Defense group. We are satisfied, very satisfied.” This was stated by the president of Cip Luca Pancalli, summarizing the Paralympic Games in Paris 2024.

With 71 medals, including 24 gold, the record from Tokyo 2020 has been broken.

In the evening, the official closing ceremony marked the end of the long Olympic summer in Paris.

The flame extinguished, the Paralympics close

The Paralympic flame was extinguished this evening at the Stade de France by bocce champion Aurélie Aubert, surrounded by numerous French athletes who left their mark in the Paralympic Games, sealing the end of the Paris Games. Shortly after, the Olympic and Paralympic cauldron in the Tuileries Garden, in the heart of Paris, was also extinguished to mark the end of a “historic summer” in France.

Paralympics, the City of Light closes its Olympic summer

Paris 2024 is closing its doors. With one last party, always marked by dance, lights, and its excellences. The highlight of the awaited closing ceremony was the musician and composer Jean-Michel Jarre, a pioneer, already in the distant ’70s, of electronic music. With him, the spotlight at the Stade de France was reignited to give one last unforgettable emotion to the cheering crowd. For this icon of electromusic, TF1 comments, the closing show was “an opportunity to create a bond with new generations and add the legendary sports palace of Saint-Denis to the long list of legendary places where he has already performed.” After the controversies stirred by the opening show of the Games and some inconveniences in the Olympic village, “Paris concluded a successful Olympic summer,” media across the Alps comment in unison. The ceremony started around 8:30 PM, unfortunately not graced by the weather as it reserved rain, which is why the organizers had to cancel the final flight of the spectacular Olympic cauldron, over the historic gardens of the Tuileries, in front of the Louvre. Throughout the duration of the Olympics and the Paralympics, the Olympic cauldron rose into the sky with a hot air balloon at dusk, so it could be seen and admired by all, locals and tourists, from various points in the Capital. Probably, as many say, this spectacular stunt will be remembered in the history of the Games, after an opening ceremony that – for the first time ever – France wanted to organize outside the stadium, aided by the natural scenery of the City of Light. Despite the rain, the Stade de France transformed into a giant dance floor, for an hour of musical entertainment on the theme “Paris is a party.” At least 24 ‘big names’, among the greatest authors and performers of “Made in France” electronic music, passed the baton on the big stage of the Stade de France: from Jean-Michel Jarre to Kungs, to Kavinsky, just to name a few recognized artists of the “French Touch” in this musical genre.

Paris 2024, Mollicone: “Success of the Italian expedition symbolizes a growing movement”

“Today the closing ceremony marks the end of the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris, where our national team was a protagonist in all events, finishing sixth in the overall medal table, achieving a historic record of 71 medals, second only to the results of Rome 1960. These successes are proof of a growing movement, which represents – as the President of the Italian Paralympic Committee Luca Pancalli said – a social transformation agent that is doing great things.” This was declared by the Chairman of the Sports Commission of the Chamber Federico Mollicone.

“The institutional presence of President Meloni and Minister Abodi is a recognition of this important work, which does not end tonight with the closing ceremony but continues every day – he adds – in sports clubs, in federations, and in all bodies that promote Paralympic sports. As President Meloni said, the athletes – even in this edition of the Paralympic Games – have been a lesson for all of us.”

Born in 1999 in Rome to Sri Lankan parents, the athlete, affected by Guillain-Barré syndrome, broke three world records in one night in the F52 category, setting the new record at 27.06 meters. First gold for Italian Paralympic athletics at the Paris 2024 Games, “Rigi” has gained unexpected popularity also for the interview he gave immediately after the race, characterized by genuineness and irony. His “what can I say” with a pronounced Roman accent won over the internet. THE PROFILE

Paralympics, half of the Italian medals won by the Fiamme Oro athletes

The Paris 2024 Paralympics conclude today with a medal table showcasing Italy winning 24 gold, 15 silver, and 32 bronze medals. The Fiamme Oro sports group of the State Police contributed to the medal tally with 13 golds, 7 silvers, and 15 bronzes, making up 49.2% of the overall total. The Paralympic disciplines that involved Fiamme Oro athletes were seven, and in four (swimming, fencing, cycling, and weightlifting), the police athletes won medals. Of the 23 athletes called up, 17 won a medal. The security observatory against discriminatory acts of the Department of Public Safety was also present in Paris, which, along with Cip, signed a memorandum of understanding that will see the Paralympic athletes in schools from October to promote the values of sports as a tool to counter every form of discrimination, especially related to disability. In the medal tally of the Fiamme Oro, there are 13 golds (all in swimming), 7 silvers (6 in swimming and one in cycling), and 15 bronzes (9 in swimming, 3 in fencing, 2 in cycling, and one in weightlifting). Paris 2024: Cangiano (Fdi): “At the Paralympics, the Italian delegation makes history”

“A few more hours and the curtain will fall on the Paralympics in Paris. An edition that saw the blue delegation triumph everywhere, especially in swimming. 71 medals, of which 24 gold: the best result in recent decades and the second-best performance ever behind Rome 1960. Many medals were also won by the 13 Campania athletes present in the blue delegation: among them, I would like to mention Assunta Legnante, who at 46 writes another page of history. These Paralympics moved me. For the strength, courage, enthusiasm, and competitive level of our athletes.” Declares Gimmi Cangiano, a Campania MP from FdI and a member of the Culture Commission in the Chamber.

“71 medals – emphasizes Cangiano – that tell a daily life made of obstacles, challenges, and victories that go beyond the Paralympic experience. 71 medals welcomed with enthusiasm in that perspective that sees in sports the overcoming of every barrier and every discrimination. Thank you to every single athlete for demonstrating that nothing is impossible if not within the limits we sometimes impose on ourselves. Thanks to President Mattarella, Premier Meloni, and Minister Abodi for their presence, support, and aid to our delegation in France. Thanks to those who believed in us. This is the Italy that does not give up, the one that truly represents us.”

The Italian Paralympic Committee: “Extraordinary Games!”

“These were extraordinary Games! This evening, our athletes will parade starting at 8:30 PM at the Stade de France for the closing of the Paris 2024 Games. Waving the Tricolor, our two youngest fourth place finishers, Domiziana Mecenate (swimming) and Ndiaga Dieng (athletics).” This is what the Italian Paralympic Committee wrote on X.

Pancalli: “Extraordinary results, it was not easy”

“It was an extraordinary Paralympics, because the result was extraordinary in terms of the number of medals, and it was not at all simple to surpass Tokyo, and also for the positioning of the medal table, which evidently confirms a positive, enterprising, and determined path of the Paralympic world together with the federations, athletes, their technical staff, civilian grassroots sports groups but also with state bodies and the Paralympic Defense group. We are satisfied, very satisfied.” This was stated by the president of Cip Luca Pancalli, summarizing the Paralympic Games in Paris 2024. The number one of Cip was moved during the final celebration at Casa Italia with the medal-winning athletes. “The emotion for those who live this movement epidermically is inevitable. I have been living it for many years, first as an athlete, and I cannot help but see in each of them what we were many years ago. And then there is also a bit of awareness and, allow me to say also a pinch of pride, not personal but with the whole team, in verifying the dignity that we have managed to give to this movement, even if certainly we can always improve.”
