The 19/20 continues its series dedicated to the riches of the Basque Country. On Wednesday August 16, the France 3 teams will take you to discover the culture of exceptional pottery in the region.

They also capture the eye, surprise with their bright colors and their sizes, pots, jars, unique vases. They have been sculpted for centuries in Ossès in the Basque Country by the same family. “It’s rope shooting, we can go up to 1.60 meters in height. It’s a technique invented by old civilizations that we have brought up to date”, says Inaki Goicoechea. The clay is then thrown by hand. It takes a year of work to achieve a good shape and good quality. The piece is then smoothed by a wooden mould, before unroping, the most delicate part.

A family story

It takes a week and a half on average to extract the rope. For the signature, on the other hand, it only takes a few seconds. The first signature is that of the family, historically used for centuries. The company is above all a story of heritage. In 1960, Jean-Baptiste Goicoechea acquired a clay quarry. Then his son Michel and his wife developed the business. Pottery is now exported all over the world.
