A study conducted by research specialists in Finland showed a worrying relationship between frequent use of social networks and increased risky alcohol consumption behavior and gambling problems, according to the “Infobay” news site.
According to the study, platforms specifically linked to these risky behaviors include “Facebook” and “Tik Tok,” while frequent use of “Instagram” was associated with high levels of alcohol drinking.
The study relied on the number of times participants used various digital platforms. This allowed specialists to measure and analyze the relationship between social media use and problematic behaviors such as excessive alcohol consumption and problematic gaming.
The results indicated that exposure to content that includes or promotes alcohol consumption and gaming activities on Facebook and TikTok can lead to the normalization of these behaviors among their users.
Additionally, interacting with friends and influencers who engage in these activities, often rewarded with likes and shares, can serve as a form of social learning, encouraging imitation of these risky behaviors.
On the other hand, the study showed that Instagram attracts users with different alcohol consumption behaviors and that use of this platform is more negative, which may explain the negative association found between its frequent use and dangerous alcohol consumption.
It is worth noting that the findings also highlighted the high incidence of problem gambling among weekly users of online gaming communities and TikTok; This emphasizes the need for targeted prevention and intervention policies.
