Among the war crimes committed by the Russians, according to the members of the independent commission, were the shelling of civilian areas, numerous executions, the use of torture and sexual violence.

This week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Unusually, he was allowed to do so via video rather than physically participating in the assembly.

Zelensky repeatedly demanded during his speech that Russia be punished for its crimes in Ukraine: “Russia is the only one that is happy with the war and has no intention of ending it soon. We want peace, we will not let Russia prevail over us.”

In his speech, Zelensky presented several possible moves on the way to peace with Russia, including punishing Russia, applying additional sanctions against it and canceling its right of veto in the United Nations.
