The information was released on the sidelines of the first ordinary Session of the National Commission for Climate Change and Biodiversity, chaired by the Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa, within the framework of Angola’s participation in COP 28.
According to the event’s spokesperson, during the meeting, five points were presented, among the Executive’s priorities and challenges, whose plan includes several ministerial departments, with a view to reducing the percentage of greenhouse gases in the country.
He said that issues related to the State of Implementation of Climate Action in Angola were also analyzed, with emphasis on the National Determined Contribution (English acronym -NDC), the Update of the National Biodiversity Strategy, the state of play on Biodiversity, Climate Change and Desertification, the Decarbonization of Electro-Mobility, as well as the Reduction of Polluting Vehicles and the Study of Methane Emission Reduction in Oil Production.
Ana Paula de Carvalho defined COP 28 as a special edition, as, in addition to the exhibition with a pavilion, Angola will have a hearing room for bilateral and other meetings.
“We will have a stand with televisions to display positive messages about our country”, he highlighted, hoping that the country will have a worthy participation.
For the implementation of the National Strategy for Climate Change (ENAC) 2022-2035, according to the government official, there are, among others, the Ministries of Energy and Water, with the energy transition, increasingly investing in clean energy, such as hydro and solar, Transport, which can contribute to decarbonization.
According to the minister, “a lot is being done in terms of energy transition in the country, with great advances, both from the Ministries of Energy and Water and Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, which contribute to reducing carbon dioxide or of greenhouse gases.
In addition to these actions, Ana Paula de Carvalho pointed out that there are others, namely, the planting of mangroves, which is being financed by Sonangol, the issue of green hydrogen and waste management.
He highlighted that at COP 28, where Angola will be represented at the highest level, he expects more developed countries to comply with the guidelines passed at COP 27 to pay less developed or industrialized countries to reduce climate change.
Transport
On the other hand, the Minister of Transport, Ricardo de Abreu, highlighted that during the meeting they reviewed two issues on decarbonization and Electromobility, creation of strategies for regulation in terms of tax benefits and increase in charging stations for electric vehicles.
The first ordinary Session of the National Commission for Climate Change and Biodiversity also served to discuss logistical aspects, especially the registration of delegates and acquisition of the COP visa, accommodation, local transport and departure dates.
COP 28 is expected to be attended by approximately 200 world leaders, 30 thousand delegates and 70 thousand participants, including members of civil society, academia, companies and others, while the multisectoral Angolan delegation will include the public and private sectors. FMA/VIC
