“Imaginary Neighbors: Japanese Visions of China, 1680-1980” will be on view at the Freer Gallery from March 16 to September 3, 2024.

As Day.Az reports with reference to the official website of the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art, the exhibition will feature Japanese works of art from the collection of Mary and Cheney Coles, donated to the National Museum of Asian Art between 2018 and 2022.

During the Edo period (1603-1868), feudal Japan was largely closed off from the outside world. For three hundred years, a disparate movement of Japanese artists, often called “literati,” looked to neighboring China for inspiration, a source of both imitation and rivalry.

The Coles collection is perhaps the largest and most comprehensive group of works by Japanese “literati” outside Japan. The paintings and calligraphy featured in this exhibition bridge reality with imagination and remain important for understanding Japanese artists’ ongoing, complex relationship with China.
