In New York City, the Nassau County Museum of Art has unveiled a major exhibition, Seeing Red: From Renoir to Warhol, exploring the many meanings, connotations, and associations of this powerful color in art.

As reported by Day.Az with reference to the official website of the museum, the exhibition presents more than 100 works by about 70 different artists, curated by Franklin Hill Perrell and Alex S. Maccaro.

“Red can represent the human condition. Its countless variations have come to signify power, but also love, energy, and beauty,” says a blurb about the exhibition on the museum’s website. “Red warns us of danger and commands us to stop, but it can also signify purity and good fortune. Red boldly represents political movements and religious identities.”

The exhibition spans a variety of world cultures through a variety of media, with works by both established and emerging artists, from classics to contemporary artists. American portrait painters such as Gilbert Stuart filled their majestic paintings of prominent figures with red to convey authority. Robert Motherwell, Ad Reinhardt, and other major abstract artists demonstrated a deep fascination with red in their commanding compositions that evoke a sense of chromatic power. Alexander Calder used red extensively in his two-dimensional works and in the mobile phones for which he is best known. Andy Warhol frequently used red in his work, from his bold and striking silkscreen portrait of Vladimir Lenin, painted in bright red, to his signature Campbell’s soup cans.

The museum notes that artists today continue to fascinate us with their interpretations of red through multiple perspectives. As the German-American artist Josef Albers wrote in 1963: “If someone says ‘red’ – the name of a color – and fifty people listen, you can expect fifty reds to pop into their heads. And you can be sure that all these reds will be very different.”

Seeing Red: From Renoir to Warhol is on view at the Nassau County Museum of Art through January 5, 2025.
