Sorrento starts from the sea and contemporary art. On May 28, in the halls of the famous Villa Fiorentino, on the main street of Sorrento, the exhibition opens ‘The sea calls those who love the sea’, a group show in which contemporary artists of the most diverse backgrounds engage in works that are inspired by the sea or that were born from the sea. Conceived by the multifaceted artist of glass and wood Massimo Sepe, which will exhibit among other things ‘The Scream of Poseidon’, a metaphor of the sea that rebels against pollution, the exhibition will also host the works of Isabel Lemaitre, Belgian painter who has lived and painted the Sorrento Peninsula for many years and who oversaw the graphic part of the exhibition.
There is a large number of artists from the Peninsula, who draw continuous inspiration from their coexistence with the sea: the potters Mariagrazia Manfredi, Raffaele Mellino, Alessandro Ottone and Antonio Schisano, the ‘surface’ marine photographer Gianfranco Capodilupo (who is also among the organizers of the exhibition), the marine photographer ‘of the abyss’ Marco Gargiulo, the sculptors Betty Surico and Brunello Sepe.
And again, works by the Milanese painter will be exhibited Caterina Bilabini, by the mosaicist from Piacenza Dino Maccini, by the Neapolitan painter Sergio Williams and the painter from Piacenza Veniero. The exhibition will have a multisensory dimension: the creator of perfumes Olga Iossa in fact, it will also involve the olfaction of visitors. Seven fragrances created by Iossa and each inspired by one of the Aeolian Islands, will be disseminated in the seven rooms in which the exhibition will be organized. But the ‘diffusers’ of perfumes will in turn be works of art: seven of the exhibiting artists have ventured, each with their own technique and inspiration, in the creation of volcanoes and islands that recall the Sicilian archipelago and within which the essences that will spread in the air will be hidden, giving each room of the exhibition a different perfume. But all inspired by the marine imagery. Among the most evocative works, the large ‘Octopus mbuttunato’ made by Massimo Sepe in wood, with eyes in fused glass and colored buttons on the tentacles instead of the suckers (in the photo).
The exhibition, hosted at Villa Fiorentino (Corso Italia 53 – Sorrento) until 9 July, will be open from Monday to Friday from 10am to 1pm and from 4pm to 8pm, while on Saturday and Sunday the evening opening will extend until 9pm. entrance ticket, equal to 4 euros, is free for residents of the Sorrento Peninsula. The last admission will be allowed half an hour before closing time.
