U.S. sources told NBC NEWS that the U.S. is aware of the Russian compromise proposal, and that the Biden administration continues to be concerned that time is running out, in the administration’s view, for a return to the nuclear deal.
Iran rejected the Russian proposal, and a spokesman for its delegation to the UN in New York said on Friday that Tehran was not interested in an interim agreement, and refused to discuss the details of the Russian proposal.
Secretary of State Anthony Blinken called on Russia to exercise its influence over Iran because “if no agreement is reached within a few weeks, then Iran’s continued progress in its nuclear program will not allow a return to the 2015 nuclear deal.
