Experts talk about a new scheme of fraud with loans in MFOs

by time news

Fraudsters began to use a new scheme, deception, to obtain data from citizens and apply for a loan from microfinance organizations. Attackers register the victim’s phone number on various sites, including MFOs, and after the stream of messages they ask the victim to send a screenshot of the screen. Artem Gavrichenkov, advisor to the general director of Qrator Labs, told RBC about this method.

Cybersecurity experts found out that scammers use 30-40 resources to register a phone number, account confirmation does not pass, but a person receives about 200 SMS with codes.

“Then the attackers contact the victim in Telegram or Whatsapp messengers, enter into trust and persuade them to send a screenshot of the screen with incoming SMS, ostensibly to help sort out the situation. Then, with the help of this information and passport data, they issue a microloan, ”the newspaper reports.

According to Gavchinenkov, the scheme is more successful because people are not asked to dictate the code itself. Such SMS bombers have been used for a long time, but obtaining a loan with their help has become a new goal, the expert noted.

MFI market participants say they are grappling with the problem. 2-2.5% of all loans were obtained by fraudulent means, the main scheme is related to the issuance of online loans, Evgenia Lazareva, head of the Popular Front project “For the Rights of Borrowers”, told RBC. The development of new verification mechanisms helps to reduce the number of such cases.
