Experts warn: new mutant flu “could wipe out 50% of humans”

While a total of 900 people have been infected with bird flu since 1997, scientists have claimed that a mutant flu that infects animals – could also be passed on to humans with a mortality rate of 50% of the population.

Medical experts fear that the current outbreak of bird flu in the world may spread among humans, and this is because it is now contagious among other animals. The re-emergence of the H5N1 virus around the world has caused concern among experts, since according to them, the deadly pathogen is now “one step too close to spreading and infecting humans”.

Cases of the virus have been detected in foxes, otters and mink, and in addition, four seals infected with avian flu have also been discovered with the help of the Strandings Animal marine program in Scotland, the Mail reported. The World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), claimed that non-poultry animals could be used as “mixing vessels” for the various influenza viruses. This may create a new mutation that is “more harmful” to humans.

While bird flu has only affected 900 people since it was first discovered in 1997, 50% of those infected have died. The organization stated: “The current situation highlights the risk that the bird flu (H5N1) is contagious between mammals, and that it could also spread to humans and other animals.” The WOAH also added that studies on how the virus spreads are ongoing.
