BerlinAfghanistan, resurgent terrorist groups such as Al-Qaeda and the “Islamic State” (IS): 20 years after the Islamist attacks in the USA, terror experts do not expect anything good for the future. Thomas Mücke from the Berlin Violence Prevention Network (VPN), for example, anticipates that nationwide “a little over a hundred people” from war zones in Syria and Iraq will return to Germany – combat-experienced and ideologically stable jihadists.

According to the Senate Administration, 135 Berliners have emigrated to Syria or Iraq in recent years, and around 20 died there. So far about 70 have returned. All returnees – including those who are still expected – have German citizenship, which is why they cannot be deported.
