The exhibition was divided into 3 exciting rooms for children to choose and decide for themselves, simulating a smoky atmosphere similar to cigarette smoke. The first room presented “E-Cigarettes,” providing knowledge about e-cigarettes, stating that they are modified cigarettes that use battery power but are still a source of nicotine that makes users addicted, identical to traditional cigarettes. Additionally, it provided information about the toxic substances in e-cigarettes, which include toxic dust, benzene, nicotine, and heavy metals, among others. Then, visitors entered the second room which simulated a BATTLE or debate between e-cigarette sellers surrounded by various e-cigarettes and a doctor in an equipped lab with various scientific tools. The debate proceeded in 3 rounds where each side attempted to present pros and cons to persuade the audience, making it both fun and informative. Finally, they moved to the third room “I Am the Decider,” where children and visitors could choose for themselves which information they preferred between that of the e-cigarette sellers and the doctor, without guided presentations and no judgments on what was right or wrong, allowing visitors to decide for themselves.

The Health Promotion Foundation (TSHF) also presented information regarding e-cigarettes, such as did you know that over a 7-year period (2016 – 2022), the number of Thai children and youth using e-cigarettes increased by 5.3 times? 25% of youth aged around 15 years had previously used e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes represent a mysterious pit full of hidden dangers, harmful to the lungs and respiratory system, detrimental to the cardiovascular system, and hazardous to the nervous system and brain, among others.

The Future of Youth Education on Smoking and Vaping

On August 18, 2023, a significant highlight at the National Science and Technology Fair was the “THE BATTLE รู้ทันควัน” exhibition, organized by the Health Promotion Foundation (TPBF). This event successfully blended education with entertainment, drawing attention to the rising concern surrounding smoking and vaping among youth in Thailand. With the Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation, Ms. Supamas Isarapakdee, praising the initiative, it becomes vital to explore potential future trends in youth education about smoking and vaping.

Interactive Learning Experiences

As showcased in the exhibition, interactive learning environments resonate well with younger audiences. Future trends are likely to incorporate more immersive experiences, such as simulations that allow youth to engage in debates regarding vaping versus traditional smoking. This hands-on approach encourages critical thinking, enabling them to discern facts from myths in a compelling format.

Enhanced Digital Education Tools

The use of technology in education is on the rise, and we can expect further integration of digital tools that facilitate engaging learning about the health implications of smoking and vaping. Mobile applications, gamification, and online platforms offering real-time information and interactive content will be instrumental in reaching adolescents, offering them the tools to make informed decisions.

Focus on Mental Health Implications

With alarming statistics indicating a rise in young individuals experimenting with vaping, future educational campaigns will likely emphasize mental health. Drawing connections between substance use, mental health challenges, and peer pressure can provide a more holistic understanding of vaping risks. Programs tailored towards resilience building and social support can empower youth in avoiding harmful behaviors.

Community-Centric Campaigns

As awareness grows, community-based interventions focusing on local needs and characteristics will gain importance. These campaigns can include workshops, seminars, and peer-led initiatives that foster open dialogues about the dangers of smoking and vaping, encouraging a culture of health within neighborhoods.

Policies and Regulations Awareness

Policy changes around vaping and smoking, especially concerning age restrictions and marketing practices, will play a pivotal role in future educational efforts. Educating youth about their rights and the implications of regulatory measures could create a knowledgeable base that advocates for healthier choices at both personal and community levels, challenging the normalization of smoking and vaping.
