Sveaborg, [City]: Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden embarked on a visit to the historic fortress of Sveaborg, where she was warmly welcomed by her parents, locals, and heritage enthusiasts. The visit aimed to highlight the shared history and defense of Sweden and Finland against Russia during the 18th century.

As Princess Victoria disembarked from the boat at the artillery pier in Sveaborg, she was greeted with a cheerful “Good morning” by those present, including av docent Jussi Nuorteva, Chairman of Samfundet Ehrensvärd, Ilari Kurri, Chief of Sveaborg’s förvaltningsnämnnd, and operations leader Carita Wilenius-Rantala.

The royal visit included a tour of the Ehrensvärd Museum, located within the fortress, which served as the official residence for commanders. The museum exhibits a collection of portraits, miniature models, weaponry, furniture in the Gustavian style, and oil paintings depicting Suaveborg in the 18th century.

During the tour, Nuorteva emphasized the significance of the defense of Sweden and Finland against Russia, then as relevant as it is today. He vividly described the historic threats faced by Finland and the decision of the Riksdag in Stockholm to strengthen defense by constructing fortresses.

Dressed in a stylish burgundy ensemble, consisting of a pantsuit, blazer, matching coat, suede boots, gloves, and handbag, Crown Princess Victoria exuded grace and elegance. To commemorate the centenary of Finland’s introduction of universal suffrage in 1906, she adorned the cover of her jacket with a unique Finnish-made silver brooch from the “Naisen änsi” jewelry series by Kalevala Koru.

The royal couple also explored Ehrensvärd’s grave monument, featuring a design initially drawn by Gustav III. The striking granite creation, created by Johan Tobias Sergel and Jean Eric Rehn, is embellished with ship prows cast from Russian cannons captured during the victorious battle at Svensksund.

Throughout the tour, Princess Victoria demonstrated great interest and knowledge of their shared history, engaging in conversations with locals and asking numerous questions. Carita Wilenius-Rantala, the operations manager at Samfundet Ehrensvärd, expressed her appreciation for the royal couple’s visit, stating that it provided an excellent opportunity to discuss Nordic cooperation and their common history.

As a gesture of gratitude, Crown Princess Victoria presented Wilenius-Rantala with a pen featuring the royal coat of arms, neatly tucked inside an elegant black box with a dark blue silk ribbon. In return, the hosts were each given durable pens engraved with the Crown Princess’s monogram and the award’s insignia.

Sveaborg has long been a popular destination for royal dignitaries, having received visits from various members of royalty worldwide. Princess Takamado of Japan, in her capacity as honorary chairman of Birdlife International, visited Sveaborg in June, showcasing the global importance of this historic fortress.

Crown Princess Victoria’s visit to Sveaborg not only highlighted the historical significance of the site but also fostered a sense of togetherness and unity among people from different times. The exploration of shared history and cultural ties is an essential aspect of strengthening Nordic cooperation and understanding.

As Crown Princess Victoria bid farewell to Sveaborg, she left behind a lasting impression of her warmth, interest, and dedication to promoting cultural heritage and cross-cultural connections.
