Harvard University researchers have identified five distinct types of sensory neurons in the colon that send varying signals to the brain. The scientists found that two of the neurons responded to gentle forces such as substances moving through the colon, while the other two reacted to more intense forces, including pain. The fifth neuron was found to be reactive during inflammation. The researchers believe the findings, which were conducted in mice, could lead to more effective therapies for gastrointestinal conditions if confirmed in humans.
