At least 10 people were killed and more than 100 injured when a fireworks depot exploded in southern Thailand on Saturday, officials said.

The explosion – which occurred in the Sungai Kolok district of Narathiwat, a province that borders Malaysia – is believed to have been caused by sparks from welding during construction work on the building.

“We identified 10 people [falecidas, ndr] and we found parts of two bodies that we still cannot identify,” Narathiwat provincial governor Sanan Pongaksorn told a news conference on Sunday.

“We are sending forensic experts to do DNA tests,” he added.

The previous balance counted nine dead.

A large area around the warehouse was devastated. Videos recorded by local media showed a plume of smoke, in addition to several shops and homes with roofs torn off and vehicles severely damaged by the force of the explosion, some in flames.

AFP photos show the site of the event where the warehouse was reduced to rubble and twisted metal.

The Bangkok Post, quoting the Ministry of the Interior, reported that around 200 houses were damaged.

These types of explosions in warehouses or workshops that produce fireworks or other pyrotechnics are common in Thailand.

This Saturday’s explosion comes just five days after another 11 people were injured in the blast at a similar factory in the northern city of Chiang Mai.
