Explosion Rocks Apartment Building in Gothenburg

In the early hours of the morning, residents in Gothenburg were awakened by a loud explosion that shook an apartment building. The incident occurred around 00:40, and emergency services quickly responded to the scene.

Joakim Hallin, an alarm and control operator at the greater Gothenburg rescue service, stated, “We are on the scene together with the police and ambulance, we are waiting for the go-ahead from the police bomb squad before we can start our work.” The police and ambulance also arrived promptly, with Sebastian Börjesson, officer on duty at the police in the West, confirming that numerous people around Gothenburg had reported the explosion. “It was a real bang that was heard all the way to Mölndal,” he added.

Upon investigation, it was revealed that the explosion had occurred at the entrance gate of the apartment building. “There is damage to the entrance door and the windows are blown out. There has also been minor damage to an apartment door inside the stairwell, but there should not be any damage inside the apartment itself,” explained Börjesson. Cars parked on the street were also affected by the blast, as reported by GP’s photographer on the scene.

The area has been cordoned off, and authorities have called in the National Bomb Squad and technicians for further investigation. The police are currently interviewing witnesses and inspecting cars in the vicinity. Börjesson mentioned that witnesses had observed one or more cars leaving the scene, but no arrests have been made at this time.

A resident from the street where the incident occurred conveyed their experience of the explosion. “I heard the bang, probably most people who live in the area did… So it was a hell of a blow. It feels quite uncomfortable, of course,” they shared. Fortunately, the police have confirmed that no injuries were reported.

The investigation is still ongoing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
