An explosion took place this Wednesday afternoon rue Saint-Jacques, in the fifth arrondissement of Paris. It is in a building which adjoins the Val-de-Grâce that the explosion occurred, at 4:55 p.m. It notably hosts the Paris American Academy. All the windows of the annex buildings exploded.

It was in a three-storey building at 277 rue Saint-Jacques that an explosion occurred this Wednesday around 5 p.m.

According to the Paris prosecutor’s office, “a building caught fire and partially collapsed”, near the Notre-Dame du Val-de-Grâce church. The building notably houses the Paris American Academy, a fashion school.

Impressive smoke escaped rue Saint-Jacques. Adjacent buildings were seriously damaged. Residents of nearby buildings were evacuated.

Nearly 270 firefighters arrived on the scene with 70 vehicles. According to a source close to the investigation, the preferred hypothesis at this stage is that a gas leak is the cause of the explosion.

The firefighters “prevented the spread of the fire to two adjoining buildings which were seriously destabilized by the explosion”, according to the prefect of police, Laurent Nuñez.

The fire was contained around 6:40 p.m., according to the Paris police chief. He said that “research is still taking place under the rubble” to find possible victims.

A wounded man is evacuated on a stretcher. At midnight, the toll was 37 injured, four of them in serious condition.
