Chronic kidney failure, a disease that affects the kidneys

Chronic kidney failure is a progressive disease in which the kidneys lose their ability to properly filter waste from the body. The most common causes include diabetes and high blood pressure, which if not properly controlled, can irreversibly damage the kidneys. Other causes include autoimmune diseases such as lupus, recurrent kidney infections or problems with urinary tract obstruction.

In Guatemala, two-thirds of cases of chronic kidney failure are related to diabetes and uncontrolled hypertension, according to recent data. This condition affects both older and younger adults, and in many cases, patients must rely on treatments such as hemodialysis for life. The only possible cure is a kidney transplant, an option not always available to everyone.
