The decision of the Deputy Minister of Finance Haris Theoharis on the extension of the deadline for the payment of traffic fees for 2024 was published in the Official Gazette. According to the decision, the deadline for the timely payment of traffic fees for the year 2024, which expires on 31-12-2023, as well as for the position of vehicles at a standstill, is extended until 02-29-2024.
Practically speaking, vehicle owners have two more months to pay the road tax without being threatened with fines (with the current provisions equaling the road tax even for one day late) while those who had planned to file plates are allowed to drive for their vehicles for two more months, without having to pay road tax.
So instead of digitally filing their license plates on December 31, 2023, they can do it on February 29, 2024.
How to file digital plates
For the “deposit” of plates it is no longer necessary – except in specific cases – to visit the D.O.Y. The process is done digitally through the taxpayer’s computer or mobile phone through the single digital portal of the public administration gov.gr and in particular on the myCAR platform with the Taxisnet codes. The user selects “Digital Immobility/Traffic” , registers or selects the registration number of the vehicle he wishes to digitally immobilize. The details of the vehicle’s parking address are recorded, i.e. the postal code of the area, the street and the number.
It is also responsibly declared that the parking space is either privately owned, rented or granted. Upon submission of the application and if the user is the sole owner, the system gives an application number and informs that the vehicle has been digitally immobilized.
In the event that there are co-owners, they are informed in the personalized information about the request, which, with a corresponding procedure mentioned above, they must approve in order to complete the process.
Digital immobility is only allowed for Passenger Cars. and Two-wheelers I.X., which are “in motion” and the owner has their license and license plates.
In the following cases, the immobility is declared to the competent D.O.Y.:
(a) Theft or misappropriation of the vehicle
(b) Circulation of the vehicle abroad
(c) Transfer of the vehicle which has not been completed
(d) Seizure of the vehicle by a public authority with its registration details
(e) Removal of vehicle registration details by public authority
(f) Delivery to the facilities of the Alternative Vehicle Management of Greece (EDOE) for the purpose of its final deletion by recycling
(g) Total destruction of the vehicle due to fire or other cause
(h) Auctioning the vehicle
(i) Alienation of the owner or occupier from the vehicle, as in the case of collection by the Municipality as abandoned
(j) Any other case where the owner or owner of the vehicle is not in possession of either the vehicle or its traffic information (license and plates).
(g) Death of the owner of the vehicle, where the immobility is declared by his heirs (provided that a license has not yet been issued in their name), to the DOU of the deceased.
To remove the digital immobility, with the same procedure, the necessary condition is the payment of the current year’s traffic fees and the insurance coverage of the vehicle’s traffic on the date and the submission of the request. The above conditions are checked by the system during the request submission process and once they have been implemented you can submit your request by pressing the “Submit Request” button located at the bottom of the screen.
The payment of annual registration fees is required for the transfer of the vehicle or its export from Greece, as well as for the re-registration of the vehicle in Greece.
As long as there is a statutory regulation for the payment of proportional traffic charges, you choose to pay monthly traffic charges, depending on the months you wish to set your vehicle in motion, digitally.
ATTENTION: the right to temporarily remove immobility by payment of analog fees (digital or voluntary in D.O.Y.) is granted only once during the year. If you wish to move the vehicle for a period of time longer than the one already selected, since you have already submitted the application for the removal of immobility, you will have to pay the remaining amount of the annual traffic fees.
