“Extensive morbidity”: avian influenza is spreading

by time news

The Ministry of Agriculture announced today (Thursday) that a poultry farm in the Jezreel Valley has been discovered with bird flu. The flu that erupted about two weeks ago in the Hula Reed has so far caused the deaths of about 5,000 cranes and later spread to chicken coops in Moshav Margaliot in the Galilee finger, leading to the destruction of hundreds of thousands of laying hens.

The Ministry of Agriculture announced that about 5,500 chickens in Moshav Barkat in the Jezreel Valley were found to be infected with bird flu. Upon receipt of the report, the chicken coop was isolated and the egg marketing was stopped immediately. The farm in Moshav Barak produces about 100,000 organic eggs a month, which constitute about 2.4% of the organic market. In addition, the eggs from the poultry farms in Moshav Margaliot, constitute about 6% of the egg market in the country.

The outbreak was ordered by Agriculture Minister Oded Forer to increase the existing egg quotas among veteran breeders, and at the same time to act to open up the market to imports. This, in order to prevent in advance a scenario of shortage of eggs during the coming months. The Ministry of Agriculture manages an inter-ministerial HFK set up to deal with a rolling incident of avian influenza morbidity in the north of the country.

At the moment, the veterinary services at the Ministry of Agriculture are simultaneously managing a number of active outbreak centers, including: Agmon Hahula among wild birds, chicken coops in Moshav Margaliot and four disease centers for turkey coops in Neot Golan, Givat Yoav, Ram-On and Ein Hahoresh. All of these centers have been isolated and the Ministry of Agriculture is continuing its monitoring activities to prevent the outbreak of influenza.

The Ministry of Agriculture clarified that in the previous centers where there had already been an outbreak: Kfar Baruch, Kibbutz Ein Tzurim, Avigdor, Maayan Zvi and Nahalal, the treatment had already ended. The ministry also warned that “bird flu is a deadly viral disease of birds. This year we are witnessing a particularly widespread morbidity, which is probably due to the massive presence of migratory wild birds infected with the disease and spreading it in space.”

Therefore, the Ministry of Agriculture asks the poultry and bird breeders: “Any exceptional case of mortality or special symptoms should be reported immediately to the attending veterinarian, the regional veterinary service and the veterinary services.

Finally, the Ministry of Agriculture calls on the public: “Chicken and egg products should be consumed only after cooking, as high heat treatment (cooking, baking, frying) destroys all bacteria and viruses in poultry. We note that this recommendation is valid routinely, and now even more so.”
